What Is Wedding Photography Insurance, and Do You Need It?

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life and you have gone through a lot of planning and expense to get there.  Once the honeymoon is over and the gifts are unwrapped, what mementos do you have of your wedding that you can cherish for your remaining years together?  Your photographs, of course.

Your wedding photographer is the most important vender you will hire for your wedding.  Should you look for wedding photographer insurance?  Is there such a thing?  The answer is yes and no.  Yes, you can insure your wedding photographer, but this is done by purchasing wedding insurance that covers a wide range of categories.  No, you probably won’t be able to insure only the photographer, however.
Your Wedding Insurance Will Cover the Photographer
You should look into wedding insurance, as well as liability insurance for your wedding early on in the planning stages.  Wedding insurance that covers the photographer will include coverage for lost film, out of focus photographs, expense if the photographer doesn’t show up, and even the additional expense for extra sittings if the wedding has to be postponed.  It will not insure your photographs for a lifetime, this would fall under your homeowner’s insurance if it covers such a thing.

Wedding insurance that includes the wedding photographer is fairly inexpensive considering the amount you are spending on the wedding.  Most policies run just a couple of hundred dollars for a medium sized wedding, and can be as high as $1,000 or more for large, elaborate weddings.  Wedding insurance will depend on a lot of things and can be fitted to suit your particular needs.  Always make sure to check the details of the wedding photographer insurance parts of the contract before you sign.

Wedding Photographer’s Insurance Carried by the Photographer
Wedding photographers insurance beyond your wedding insurance is the responsibility of the photographer.  The wedding photographer insurance will cover such things as his cameras and equipment, and liability in case someone trips over a cord that he left on the floor or if he swings around in the aisle and hits Grandmama Betty in the head with his heavy bag.  These things do happen.  He will also probably have his business insured in the case of lawsuits for malpractice or if someone sues him because their eyes look brown in their photos when they are clearly blue.

Wedding photographer insurance is typically not very expensive, but is a necessary expense to protect every professional photographer.  Insurance is just one of the many overhead expenses a wedding photographer has to endure.  If you’ve ever wondered why the cost of a professional wedding photographer seems so high, you should know that only a portion of that is actually his profit, usually much less than half.

When you interview your venders, inquire about what kind of and how much insurance they carry.  Do not feel as if you are being nosey and that it’s not any of your business.  It is absolutely your business to know that if something happens to your wedding photos, or any other part of your wedding, that they have the means to cover the expenses.  Asking a potential photographer about his wedding photography insurance coverage will let you know how responsible a business man he is, which is also important to know when shopping for your wedding photographer.
